• making a diploma project under the guidance of a teacher (adviser) and presenting that project

Choosing an adviser

The procedure for choosing an adviser

The selection of an adviser for the diploma project is based on the school results obtained at the end of the third year’s summer session (usually in the third week of practice). The grades on the outstanding disciplines promoted in advance, which are handed over to the dean office by the end of the summer session, will be taken into account.

Students will choose their adviser in the descending order of the school situation, within the limits of the available places from each teaching staff member. Students who will not be present can submit the option (or preferably a list of options) through a colleague or by mail to rsilion@tuiasi.ro.

A list of the themes proposed by each teacher is displayed before selecting the adviser.

Joint supervision projects

If the project is conducted at another university (Erasmus program) or in an internship at a company, the paper may be written in English, but the title, abstract and presentation will be in Romanian.

For projects made within a partner company, the graduate must attach the company’s approval and a brief appreciation of the student’s activity signed by the company’s coordinator. The work schedule, the interim reports, the final form of the paper and the presentation must be approved by the guidance teacher.

Exam topics

The exam consists of 30 grid questions, 5 questions from each of the following categories:

  3. Communication in computer networks
  4. Elements of logical structures design
  5. Elements of hardware description in Verilog
  6. Testing of logic circuits
• Information Technology study program:
  1. Algorithms. Search and sort
  2. Elements of computer architecture
  3. Communication in computer networks
  4. Elements of relational databases
  5. Internet technologies
  6. Programming engineering

The issues covered in each category are presented each year in good time before the assessment exam.

Exam details

The Fundamental and Specialist Knowledge Assessment Examination takes place after the summer session at the end of the fourth year. There are also two sessions in September and February, respectively.

Students must enroll both at the faculty secretariat and online to be able to pass the exam and/or present the diploma project.

Diploma project

Student’s responsability

The preparation of the diploma project starts on the day when the adviser is chosen.

The student has the obligation to get in touch with the adviser in order to determine the topic of the diploma project and the work schedule. The student has the obligation to observe the work stages decided by mutual agreement with the adviser.

Intermediate reports

In the course of the preparation of the diploma project, each student must submit two interim reports. These reports will count on the “Practice for the Diploma Project” grade in the curriculum. Thus, in the second semester of the year in which the project is presented, each student must upload two intermediate reports on the Moodle platform: one approximately at the beginning of March and the other approximately at the end of April.

The first report must have 2-3 pages and contain:

• project title (which can not be changed),
• purpose of the chosen theme,
• references to similar topics/themes,
• used hardware/software resources,
• chosen algorithms or methods,
• expected results.

The secondreport must have 5-6 pages and contain:

• application hardware/software design,
• interim results obtained,
• difficulties/challenges encountered and solutions.

The Diploma Board will review these materials in parallel with the final project. Not presenting this report is equivalent to the student’s option to present the paper in a future session.

Writing, structure and organization of the work

Details of the structure and organization of the paper can be found in the document Structura_si_organizarea_lucrarii.pdf (in Romanian).

There is a guide to writing and formatting the paper developed by assistant professor George-Emil VIERIU in Libre Office which can be found in PDF and ODT (v1.4) formats. Also, there are two files for the cover: A3 cover and A4 cover, and the font used throughout the document is CMU Serif.

The first page after the one containing the title of the diploma thesis must be the Declaration of Authenticity of the Diploma Work(the writing and formatting guide already contains this document). This statement must be dated (by the date the work was handed over to the secretariat) and signed by the student.

Taking the final exam and presenting the diploma project

Enrollment procedure

Required documents to enroll:

• application form with signature of the adviser (filled in capital letters);
• appreciation of the adviser;
• a copy of the license/diploma/graduation/dissertation in the final version (printed version and on CD/DVD);
• identity card and birth certificate (original) and xerox copies;
• 2 diploma photos for those who have not taken the completion exam before;
• request for equivalence of the exam or project presentation promoted at an earlier session, with the agreement and signature of the committee chairman, as appropriate;
• re-enrollment receipt for retaking the completion exam or the project presentation, as appropriate.

Submissions can not be changed. Students will not be able to support their bachelor’s thesis without having to submit to the secretariat all the necessary papers for registration (including the license paper + CD with the license project attached to the paper).

Students must also register online up to the last day of enrollment at a specified web address.The abstract of the project is submitted online on the day of enrollment and is to be made public on the faculty website.

Preparing for the diploma exam

In the week before the Fundamental and specialty knowledge assessment exam, the teachers that make the exam subjects meet and discuss with the students. These meetings involve the presentation of the types of subjects that will be at the exam, discussions on the topics of the past years, and questions from the students. Typically, one hour is allocated to each of the topic categories. In one day, there will be discussions on the common topics for the two specializations (Algorithms. Search and sort, Elements of computer architecture, Communication in computer networks), and another day for the different topics from the Computer Science study program (Elements of logical structures design, Elements of hardware description in Verilog, Testing of logic circuits) and the Information Technology study program (Elements of relational databases, Internet technologies, Programming engineering).

Choosing the date and time of the project presentation

At the end of the enrollment period and before taking the exam, the date and time of the project submission will be chosen. Thus, all enrolled students will have the opportunity, in descending order of the graduation average, to choose their desired time slot (15 minutes) when to present the project. If, for whatever reason, a student can not be present at the slot choosing, he/she can pass the preferences through another student. Depending on the number of students, there will be one or two series (separated by a short break) within each presentation day.

Taking the exam

Students must be present at least 15 minutes before the exam starts and must have their identity card or passport with the bearer. At the exam students are seated in the classroom in alphabetical order.

Each student will receive the exam subjects, a grid that has to be filled in with “X” next to the considered correct answer and a number of drafts. The questions have a unique correct answer, and the entire exam lasts for three hours. Upon the turning in the completed grid, the subject and the drafts, the grid is signed and sealed by the head of the room, and the students must sign a list certifying that they have taken the exam. Students can not leave the room during the first hour of the exam, and the last three students left in the room must leave at the same time.

The results of the exam, as well as the subject with the correct answers, are displayed during the same day. Any appeals may be lodged until the next morning, when they are resolved.

The exam is considered passed if the student obtained a grade of at least 5.

Presenting the diploma project

When presenting the diploma project, students will have to bring one copy of the bachelor’s work (other than the one delivered to the secretariat), which they will receive back after the presentation.
The presentation should not take longer than 10 minutes (15 minutes including questions from the committee/board).

Students must be present at least 15 minutes before the start of the presentations session they were assigned to.

The file with the presentation can be submitted online by filling out a form or, in the worst case, can be brought on a usb drive on the presentation day. The presentation must be in one of the PDF, PPT, PPTX, or EXE formats (if you have special presentation requirements please check beforehand with the committee).

After all students present their project in from of the committee, a brief break follows, after which the presentation of the practical part of the project begins in an order chosen by the committee. After all the students presented the practical part, the deliberations follow, and afterwards the committee gives the grades for the diploma project. At the end of each presentation day, the students are personally notified of the project grade.

Studies are deemed successful if the exam grade is at least 5, the grade from the project is at least 5, and the arithmetic mean of the two samples is at least 6.

Unfinished studies

If the student gets a grade of less than 5 on the written exam, then he/she may still support the presentation of the diploma project, but the studies are not considered to be completed. In one of the subsequent diploma sessions, the student may retake the exam and may request (if he/she wants) the equivalence of proof to support the diploma project; that is, he no longer has to take the presentation and receives the grade obtained in the previous session.

If, after the written exam, the student does not present himself/herself to present of his/her diploma project, the student may support the respective examination at a later session. Then the student can, if he/she likes, equate the written exam by retaining the grade obtained in a previous session; in this case he will no longer support the written test.

Completion of the bachelor studies

Upon successful completion of the Diploma Exam, students must complete a clearance sheet for the subsequent issue of the Engineer’s Diploma. This sheet involves obtaining signatures and stamps from the entities and institutions listed on the second page (the signatures from the hostels must be obtained only from the dormitories where the student stood).

The engineer’s degree is usually issued after approximately one year of graduation.
But on the day of the presentation of the project, the students will fill out an application for a certificate of graduation.

Completion of the master studies

The completion of the Master’s degree is similar to the one of the Bachelor’s degree, the big difference being the absence of the written exam.
Thus, students will have the opportunity to choose an adviser for the dissertation project according to the proposed topics and the number of maximum students assigned to each teacher. How to sign up for project support is the same as for the diploma project, except for the unnecessary online sign-up.
